The client chose to utilize their dated basement to accomplish multiple project goals. Because the basement was a walk-out ground level space, this made a lot of sense to invest in updating it and bringing it up to ADA Compliance. The final scope achieved all client goals and improved the value of their entire space.

In the basement, we arrived at an outdated dark space that had experienced water damage and some of the previous finishes had been removed. The space had served as a bedroom in the past, but was no longer up to code because of safety egress requirements. In order to achieve a bedroom in the basement, the first item to address was the egress issue. By excavating and installing a new code compliant window and window well for emergency escape, we were able to solve this.

After this was solved, the sky was the limit. Our team designed a new bedroom, bathroom, and living space that mimicked the original design but now lends itself to meeting Aging in Place single level living needs. In the bedroom, we removed one of the closets and relocated another to make the bedroom larger. We reconfigured the wall for bed placement, and the entry to the bathroom to optimize flow. The basement bathroom was attached to the bedroom and we wanted to make this usable with a wheelchair (if needed), so we expanded the bathroom, added a larger walk-in shower with two grab bars, a handheld shower head, and added a chair-height toilet with an elongated seat for ease. Our client wanted a pop of color in the basement, so they chose a deep blue freestanding vanity with plenty of storage. To compliment the blue, we installed bamboo wood floating shelves and a matching framed mirror. We installed cultured marble shower walls that reached the ceiling with a large matching niche.

In the main section of the basement, we removed the old carpet and installed LVP and a mini-split unit. We removed two closets in the back of the room and in that space made all the needed preparations for a future kitchenette to be installed. Which included plumbing and electrical modifications. We removed the carpet on the stairs and installed wooden treads on them with a wood finish to better match the new flooring, we also installed handrails on both sides of the stairs. We also improved the laundry room and their cedar clothes closet all while using some of its square footage to enlarge that basement bathroom.

These basement finishes came together to create a space that met all three goals the clients had for Aging in Place, re-sale, and an awesome guest space!

To meet these goals upstairs, the two upstairs bathrooms were remodeled but kept their original layout. In the primary bathroom, we wanted to go with a spa-like bathroom with crisp lines and soothing colors. We used cultured marble in all the bathroom showers. Once this client chose the finishes for the first bathroom they decided to keep it simple and copy & paste to the other two bathrooms. We used the same line of plumbing fixtures in each bathroom, the same LVT flooring, and grab bars to make the selections process easy for the client.
