This project received the 2026 NRVHBA Best Outdoor Living Award
On the backside of this cozy Village Way home in Blacksburg, Virginia, stood a sun-worn, twelve-by-twelve builder-grade deck that hosted a buggy and hot environment for all who would dare to venture there. These clients had lived with this as their home’s only option for “outdoor living” long enough and knew something had to change, but they didn’t know what or how.
The story of this outdoor living project is a true testament to the benefit of the design build process. In the early stages of this project, the general thought began with, “We would like to replace our deck… and maybe we could add a roof.”
These clients were more than ready for a change, so they reached out to start the design process with our team.

As the outdoor living project took shape, the Blue Ridge Design Build team worked together to outline a 12×22 elevated deck space that incorporated an enclosed three-season room and a covered open-air balcony that would serve as a grilling space and a connective tie to the backyard hardscaping via a spiral staircase.
The three-season room is the perfect crossbreed between a sunroom and a screen porch, as it incorporates the best of both categories. This concept in and of itself solved most of the issues we faced, but the way it was executed made it so special.
Two product selections stand out when discussing this project. The window and screening system was purchased from a local Richmond, Virginia-based company, Turnkey Porch Enclosures. Their product combines a screened enclosure with “soft glass” technology, which provides a more enclosed feel, granting protection from wind, pollen, and a level of enclosure during colder months.
Additionally, the client opted for a paver floor system as their “decking material” inside the porch enclosure. This is not commonly known as an option for decking surfaces, but is achievable by using a product called StoneDeks as underlayment prior to installing the pavers. The use of these two products made all the difference in pushing this space from a traditional screened porch to more of a sunroom-adjacent living space.
Other products used to elevate this space include two Velux skylights with solar-powered voice-activated shades, TimberTech composite decking, a spiral staircase from The Ironshop, which is installed with matching TimberTech treads cut with a CNC machine, and Westbury aluminum hand railing.
